Emily Ruth Hazel is a cross-pollinating poet, writer, and lyricist who engages a diverse audience by creating poetry infused with music and music infused with poetry. In 2014, she was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship to develop a full-length poetry book manuscript during a residency at The Hambidge Center. A graduate of Oberlin College’s Creative Writing Program, she was twice awarded national Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Prizes and has written more than twenty commissioned works. Her chapbook, Body & Soul (Finishing Line Press), was a New Women’s Voices finalist. Poems from the latter collection were translated into music on the chamber jazz album “Soon We Will Not Be Here” by James Hall Thousand Rooms Quartet. Emily’s writing has appeared in numerous print publications and digital projects, including Magnolia: A Journal of Women’s Socially Engaged Literature, Kinfolks: A Journal of Black Expression, The Mochila Review, Kindred, Texas Poetry Calendar 2014 (Dos Gatos Press), Deep Waters (Outrider Press), PoetsReadingtheNews.com, and SparkandEchoArts.org. After eleven years in New York City, Emily now lives in Los Angeles, where she is developing two new poetry book manuscripts.
